This is just a note to say that I have switched my blog host from WordPress.com to Hostinger. There were a few reasons why I wanted to do this:
- I could not embed Power BI reports in my blog posts on WordPress.com without switching to a very expensive hosting plan.
- I saved money. I could purchase 4 years of hosting with Hostinger and have more customization options for the cost of one year on WordPress.com. This also means I have a little more administration responsibility than before. I thought WordPress.com was an easy platform that managed most things well. I liked that I didn’t have to spend time tinkering with the database or plug-ins. And I was fine the the built-in usage reports and blog subscriptions they provided. But it was no longer worth the cost to me given the other downsides.
- There has been a lot of drama with the CEO of Automattic (WordPress.com’s parent company). This includes distasteful conduct on Reddit followed by slashing the sustainability team, having WordPress.org block WP Engine and taking control of one of WP Engine’s plugins. There have also been voluntary separation offers in 2024 with some harmful terms and a layoff this year of 16% of its workforce. I’m not really a member of the WordPress community. I’m just a consumer who is observing all of this. I decided I do not want to actively contribute revenue (small amount though it is) to what is going on there, and I don’t want to risk having my content stuck in there if something big should happen to the company.
But with any transition, there are bound to be a few bumps along the road. For me, this has included some weird issues importing content, updating some configurations I was not previously aware of, and formatting issues with my new theme. I have most things fixed, but not all. I have 12 years of blog posts that I had to migrate. I’ve gone through them to make sure no images are missing and that they look ok with a light background theme. I’m still working on making them readable with the dark version of my theme. There are things like code snippets that aren’t properly switching colors yet. But I’ll get there eventually.
Here’s where you can help:
- If you were subscribed to my blog to be notified of new posts, your subscription has been migrated along with my blog. You probably received an email notification about this post. If you no longer wish to receive notifications about new posts, there is a link at the bottom of the email to unsubscribe.
- If you notice a formatting issue or another problem with a page on my site, feel free to let me know. There’s a contact form on my About Me page, or you can reach me on BlueSky.
I should be back to blogging at least monthly soon. I just needed to take some time to do this migration and get most things settled before my WordPress.com renewal date.
Thanks for reading! More blog posts about Fabric and Power BI coming soon.
